Background information

Skellefteå municipality in the region of Västerbotten region in the north of Sweden has applied for funding from the Just Transition Funds to develop customised traning courses and increase their adult education capacity in the region. The specific aim is to train the future workforce for the new green steel and metal factories that is key to the green transition in Sweden.

Content of measure

The measure aims to better match workers with the needs of the metal industry employers in the region, throughout the value chain. The project aims to coordinate the local actors to provide a more well suited adult vocational training to the local metal industry employers, either by creating new vocational training programmes or adapting existing training programmes. The project has recieved SEK 20 million (€ 1,73 million), with an additional SEK 1,9 million (approx. € 165,000) from Skellefteå municipality and SEK 300,000 (€ 26,000) from the Västerbotten region.

Beyond creating new adult vocational training programmes, the funds should also cover the purchasing of new educational equipment and train the educators at the adult vocational training providers.

The social partners have not been directly involved, but both trade unions and employer organisations are positive to increasing the availability of adult vocational training

Views and reactions

IF Metall, the main trade union for steel and metal workers, has previously criticised employers for not investing in training for their workers, and have historically called for more vocational training to meet the demands of the green and digital transitions.
