Background information

Wielkopolska province has joined the PPCA - Powering Past Coal Alliance, the world's first international initiative to protect the climate and accelerate economic development through a rapid transition away from coal-fired power generation. Wielkopolska is the fifth Polish member of the PPCA after Eastern Wielkopolska, Koszalin, Walbrzych and ZE PAK, which joined in 2021. The PPCA was initiated by Canada and the UK in 2017.

Part of belonging to the PPCA is the implementation of the LIFE programme, which is the European Union's financial instrument dedicated to co-financing projects in the field of environmental protection, nature conservation and human impact on the climate.

The LIFE AFTER COAL PL programme, implemented by dozens of partners from Wielkopolska, is primarily related to the implementation of the Eastern Wielkopolska 2040 Climate Neutrality Strategy.

Legal reference: Regulation (EU) 2021/783 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2021 establishing a Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE), and repealing Regulation (EU) No 1293/2013 (Text with EEA relevance).

Content of measure

The beneficiaries of the project are to be the residents of Eastern Wielkopolska. The Life After Coal PL project allows local governments and companies operating in Eastern Wielkopolska to apply for funding.

European Union funding for the project from the LIFE Programme: over PLN 50 million (€11.58 million, as of 1 March 2024)

Funding from the Environmental Protection and Water Management Fund: more than 28 million PLN (€6.48 million, as of 1 March 2024)
