Background information

In April 2024 the Government decided to establish a Just Transition Commission to advise on reaching climate neutrality in Ireland. The Commission was established following the recommendation of a Just Transition Taskforce which also set down the terms of reference for the new Commission. Membership of the Commission comprises nominees from the five pillars of social dialogue (Agriculture; Community and Voluntary; Employer; Environment; and Trade Union pillars) as well as experts in several fields.

Content of measure

The role of the Just Transition Commission is to advise the Irish government regarding a fair move to a climate neutral economy, giving consideration to issues such as maximising employment opportunities and supporting communities that may be negatively affected.

The Just Transition Commission has been tasked with:

  • preparing and analysing research which will inform policy and investment
  • advising on planning, implementation and progress Just Transition targets and goals
  • providing strategic advice and engagement on the Just Transition
  • undertaking engagement with communities, sectors or regions facing specific challenges arising from the transition, and advising on interventions or supports which may be required
