Background information

The climate challenges facing the whole world demand changes in human behaviour and work, the development of innovative business models and solutions, and the transition to green technologies. In this direction, postal operators as major logistics players can be considered leaders in introducing new rules because, due to the nature of their work, they significantly affect the environment with their carbon footprint created by the performance of their core business. Croatian Post is no exception to this and as a response invests considerable funds in the acquisition of electric delivery vehicles, and the development of a network of the necessary charging stations, and increasing the energy efficiency of its facilities.

Content of measure

Croatian Post marked its 25th birthday in October 2024 with a panel on 'Green logistics - the path to carbon neutrality', given that sustainable business is one of the fundamental pillars of Post’s corporate strategy until 2030, and to achieve a zero CO2 emission rate by 2040. Post's commitment to this goal is confirmed by concrete moves: it owns the largest fleet of electric vehicles in Croatia with more than 420 vehicles, develops its network of more than 80 charging stations, and builds energy-efficient business facilities. Furthermore, parcel machines, which they were the first to offer to the market, are considered a 'green delivery channel'. Although Croatian Post has not been a monopoly for a long time, it still holds between 35 and 40 percent of the postal services market in Croatia. Two thousand postmen and delivery personnel of Croatian Post make more than one million deliveries a day, including more than 80 thousand packages. Croatian Post has the largest retail network in the country - 1,016 post offices in 800 settlements, and approximately half of the offices are located in rural areas, including islands. Therefore, possible reductions in environmental pollution are quite significant.

The Post attaches great importance to sustainable business, and in 2024, the Post was marked with a panel on the topic 'Green Logistics - the Path to Carbon Neutrality'. The International Day for Reducing CO2 Emissions is celebrated on 28 January 2025, to encourage citizens to reduce their carbon footprint. The dynamic development of technology and the digital transformation of Croatian society have significantly shaped the Croatian Post’s business. Post employees are fully aware that every small change in daily habits at home and at work contributes to preserving the environment and reducing CO2 emissions, and saving energy.

14 December 2024

Croatian Post is investing significant financial resources in developing and improving its services, which has greatly enhanced Croatia's position in global postal standards, keeping in mind the requirements of the green transition. According to an analysis by the Croatian Employers' Association, this sector has a significant multiplier effect on the economy and is ranked among the ten most influential industries. Croatian Post has invested almost €200 million in the development of new services in recent years, significantly improving the quality and scope of its offerings. Among the largest projects is the National Storage and Sorting Center, valued at €50 million. An additional €160 million of investment is planned for the period from 2024 to 2027. Most of these funds will be directed towards strengthening the capacity of online business and developing the network of parcel terminals, which will increase competitiveness and optimize costs. With these investments, Croatian Post is reversing the negative trend of decreasing capital investments in the sector, which fell from 12.3% of operating revenues in 2019 to 6.9% in 2023. According to the latest report by the Universal Postal Union, Croatia jumped from eighth to sixth place in the global postal service quality ranking, thanks to improvements in the categories of reach and resilience. Reach, which measures the scope and efficiency of the international postal network, recorded an increase of 6 points, while resilience, which reflects the system's ability to adapt to economic and technological challenges, improved by 2.7 points. Croatia is now ahead of nine European Union countries, including Spain, Greece, and Denmark. Although employee protests over low wages have drawn public attention, data shows that Croatian Post has taken concrete steps to improve the material status of its workers. The average net salary in 2023 was €1,038, which is very close to the national average of €1,148. In 2024, gross salaries are planned to increase by 25%, while in 2025 salaries are expected to grow by an additional 20%. In addition, Croatian Post became the first among state-owned enterprises to introduce a bonus scheme for workers, which increased total net earnings by 43% from 2019 to 2023. By 2025, net earnings are projected to grow by as much as 55%.

Use of measure

In its approach to fleet electrification, Croatian Post has committed itself to achieving zero carbon emissions by 2040 by joining the Climate Pledge initiative, an international and cross-sector community of companies and organizations. It also participates in the programme of the International Postal Corporation (IPC), whose goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to the level of 2019. A requirement for such a goal is to have a fleet with at least 50% vehicles on alternative fuels, of which 25% are electric, by 2030. In the process of green transition so far, thanks to electric vehicles, which make up 23 percent of their total fleet, Post has annually saved more than 870 tons of carbon dioxide. These goals of reducing and, ultimately, eliminating the harmful impact on the environment, along with parcel machines as the green delivery channel of Croatian Post, can help preserve the Earth as a quality place for future generations to live.
