The aim of the measure is to support migrant women in starting a business in Estonia in order to facilitate financial independence and long-term stability as well as develop local economy.
The programme is organised in collaboration of Estonian Refugee Council (an NGO), Garage48, and Swedbank (private companies). The programme was first initiated in 2023 and took place in Ukraine. The latest round in Estonia started in autumn of 2024.
The programme is designed for migrant women who are starting or developing their microbusinesses. Participants receive mentorship and guidance from local experts on how to start, manage, and grow a business in Estonia. The programme includes sessions on key topics such as financial planning, design thinking, marketing, leadership, and digitalisation.
As part of the programme, a two-day online hackathon was held to support participants in creating online shops and websites. A hackathon is an intensive brainstorming event where people with diverse skills come together to exchange ideas, form teams around the most promising concepts, and develop working prototypes. In addition, this year's programme included activities aimed at supporting the mental well-being of refugee participants and strengthening community ties, such as group mental health activities and learning about local history and culture.
According to Refucee Council, 41 teams of whom 14 were led by refugee women, participated in the programme. 26 teams, of whom 4 were led by refugee women, completed the programme.
