Background information

The National Energy and Climate Plan of the Czech Republic has been prepared on the basis of the requirement of the Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The Plan contains objectives and policies for the period 2021-2030 with a view to 2050. These are: greenhouse gas reduction; energy efficiency; internal energy market; energy security; and research, innovation and competitiveness. The Czech Republic's National Plan was approved in January 2020. In October 2023, the Czech government took note of the draft update of this document. The document was finalized during 2024, also taking into account the so-called iterative process with representatives of the European Commission

Content of measure

The strategy document does not introduce any new obligations, but summarises the measures that need to be implemented in order for the Czech Republic to meet the commitments it has already made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting necessary modernisation of the energy sector. The steps taken are designed to ensure that the Czech Republic meets its commitments in line with the EU's climate targets. The most important measures of the plan include, for example, further development of electricity production from renewable sources, especially wind power, decarbonisation of central heating plants and development of nuclear power, including the use of medium-sized modular reactors. The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of the Environment, together with experts from across the public administration, the private sector, environmental organisations, social partners and representatives of regions and cities, worked together to prepare the National Plan. The Ministry of Industry and Trade also organised a public consultation on the plan, which involved both the professional and wider public in the preparation.
