Background information

The action is supported financially by the Coca-Cola foundation in Cyprus and implemented by the NGO AKTI Project and Research Center. The aim of the initiative is to influence a shift towards sustainability in the sector of Hotels, Restaurants and cafes (HoReCa) targeting energy saving and reduction of CO2 emissions, water saving and sustainable supply chain. The initiative is in line with the UN’s sustainable development goals and the EU Directive 2003/87/EC on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The action represents a continuation of the Zero Waste Beach initiative, which was successfully implemented between 2017-2023 by the same actors aiming to reduce plastic marine pollution in the Island.

Content of measure

All businesses of the HoReCa sector are eligible to be inducted voluntarily in the network of the zero-waste initiative. Following the expression of interest, the zero-waste HoReCa team visits the interested businesses to assess the current situation through an established assessment tool. The areas of assessment concern the current energy and water saving practices of the businesses as well as their procurement and circular economy practices. Based on the assessment, the Team issues specific recommendations for businesses on the ways that can become more sustainable and closer to the goal of zero emission. The team also provides an inspirational guide with practices that can be implemented by the businesses, support and monitoring of activities and training on issues related with energy and water consumption and reduction, emission tracking and sustainable procurement practices.

The initiative also provides annual awards of the best HoReCa sustainable practices.
