The Cyprus Telecommunication Authority (CYTA), a semi-government organisation, has developed systematic action in recent years by offering products and services aiming to contribute to sustainable development, conductive to the minimisation of the environmental impact. CYTA’s actions have yielded significant results, achievements and awards. Only in 2023, CYTA has been awarded for the fifth year as the ‘Golden Protector of the Environment by the Pan-Cypriot Environmental Awards competition for Organisations and Enterprises, a Honorary Award as ‘Business of the Year’ for its Holistic Waste Management policy at the ‘Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility Good Practice Awards’ and five gold, one silver and two bronze awards at the ‘Cyprus Responsible Business Awards’ competition for its initiatives on waste management, recycling, green buildings and protection of biodiversity.
The initiatives of CYTA aiming to just transition and the minimisation of the environmental impact are:
The ‘zero waste to landfill’ initiative: Within the frame of environmental policy of CYTA bolstered by proper training of employees, materials such as electrical and electronic equipment, cars, paper, plastic, cables, batteries, organic waste, stakes, ink cartridges, tires and wood are recycled or reused avoiding disposal to landfills. The target is to recycle, reused or compose a minimum of 95% of the waste materials of the organisation.
The ‘green offices’ initiative: The initiative includes the installation of photovoltaic systems in buildings for electricity and the operation of hybrid photovoltaic systems in mobile telephony base stations. It also includes actions related to energy and water consumption, waste management, use of environmentally friendly cleaning products and detergents, quality of food and beverages, conversion of open spaces into green areas and environmental education.
Actions to ‘protect and sustain biodiversity in Cyprus’: it is package of activities aiming to preserve biodiversity and includes (1) the creation of a 2,000 square meters ‘Bee Park’ in the area of the ‘Athalassa National Forest Park’ including the plantation of beekeeping plant species, the establishment of an automated irritation system and the placement of bee shelters. (2) ‘Protection of bats’ an action that aims to protect bats with the installation of on-line camera system, restoration of an abandoned mine tunnel in Troodos mountains, and the placing of 35 Bats Shelters. (3) Installation of 30 artificial nests for swifts in five different CYTA buildings specifically designed to attract swifts arriving in the Island.

Relevant decisions on the environmental sustainability actions of CYTA are taken based on the feedback generated by the different groups of stakeholders that the organization maintains relations, which is performed through different communications channels. The key stakeholder groups, the means of communication with each and communication frequency are provided in the Annual Sustainability Report 2023 and includes employees and employee representatives, consumers, suppliers and public authorities.
