Background information

The Action Plan is a deliverable of the project ‘Plastic Waste Free Islands’ implemented by the NGO Together Cyprus – The Environmental and Social Network and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) between the years 2019 – 2022 funded by the International Union for Conversation of Nature (IUCN). The aim of the project was to tackle the use of plastic waste leakage in Cyprus and find solutions to decrease ocean plastic pollution. The Action Plan outlines practices for the tourism, fisheries and waste management sectors aiming to avoid and reduce plastic waste generation and leakage into the environment.

Content of measure

The Action Plan addresses decision and policy makers and provides sectoral policy recommendations. For the tourism sector, the Action Plan recommends to the government the adaptation of economic incentives for the sectoral businesses as well as legal ban and taxation of harmful materials. It issues eight (8) specific actions for local stakeholders and competent authorities endorsing the Action Plan for the reduction of consumption of single-use plastic by 50% by 2030, reduction of plastic production by 20% by 2030, reduction of micro-plastic pollution by 25% by 2030 and increase plastic segregation and recycling by 50% by 2025.

Similar incentives and taxation are also recommended for the fisheries sector. It issues another eight (8) sectoral recommendations for local stakeholders and competent authorities endorsing the Action Plan aiming to reduce loss and leakage of fishing nets by 30% by 2030, increase recycling by 20% of fishing nets by 2025 and reduce consumption of plastic fishing packaging by 30% by 2030.

Finally, for the waste management sector the recommendation is to fund the waste management infrastructure, economic incentives for producers and taxation for certain materials for recycling. It issues six (6) specific recommendation for the stakeholders endorsing the Action Plan for the reduction of micro-plastic pollution by 50% by 2030, increase the reuse of plastic by 50% by 2030 and increase plastic segregation and recycling by 50% by 2030.

Involvement

Based on the Acknowledge part of the report, this Action Plan is a result of the workshops and consultations carried out with local partners from the government, private sector, the industry, academic, research and non-governmental organizations. The role and support for the issuing of the Action Plan of two other international organizations - Didier and Martine Primat Foundation and Serious Business – is also acknowledged.
