Background information

Waterscan is a free advisory service launched by VLAIO (Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) to help SMEs in Flanders manage their water consumption more efficiently. Developed in collaboration with VLAKWA (Flemish Water Knowledge Centre), the initiative responds to increasing concerns over water scarcity, rising costs, and the need for climate-resilient business practices.

Content of measure

The measure offers two types of scans: a first-line scan, which is entirely free of charge, and a more comprehensive scan, for which the company contributes 20% of the actual cost. Both are conducted by certified engineering firms appointed by VLAIO.

The first-line scan includes a basic assessment of the company’s water demand, sources, and usage patterns. It provides a simplified water balance, identifies opportunities for water reuse and alternative sources, and offers initial suggestions for water-saving measures. The comprehensive scan builds on this by delivering a detailed technical analysis, including cost-efficiency evaluations, potential treatment options, and, where relevant, additional measurements and technical elaboration.

Eligible companies must be SMEs located in Flanders with an annual water consumption of at least 500 m³ and must not be legally required to conduct a water audit. The scan results in a written report with concrete recommendations and can serve as a basis for further investment or subsidy applications. Applications are open until 30 June 2025 for the comprehensive scan and 10 September 2025 for the first-line scan.
