Background information

In response to evolving environmental challenges and the European Union’s climate objectives, the Walloon Government has undertaken a comprehensive reform of its investment aid schemes targeting environmental protection and energy use. As of 1 January 2025, the existing support mechanisms will be consolidated and rebranded under the umbrella of 'GREEN aid'. This reform is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable industrial practices, enhance energy efficiency, and align regional policy with EU directives on climate neutrality and resource efficiency.

Content of measure

The GREEN aid reform introduces stricter access conditions, revised intervention rates, and a broader scope of eligible investments, aiming to support the region’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

To qualify, companies must conduct an AMUREBA audit or feasibility study, install energy meters, and maintain energy accounting. These requirements apply progressively: in 2025 for investments over €25 000 (energy efficiency) or €100 000 (renewables), and universally from 2026. Investments must also have a payback period longer than three years.

Aid rates vary by company size and location. For example, SMEs can receive up to 30% for environmental investments, rising to 40% with EMAS certification. Large enterprises in non-priority zones may receive as little as 4-8%. Maximum eligible costs are defined per technology, such as €5 060/kW for small wind turbines or €1,320/m² for solar thermal systems.

For investments above €500 000, 50% of the aid may be paid upfront, with the remainder conditional on verified performance. Smaller projects receive the full amount after completion. A new premium supports refrigeration systems using low-GWP refrigerants, with maintenance logs required.

Excluded from support are fossil fuel-based systems, investments merely complying with existing EU standards, and those with a payback period of three years or less. The reform reflects Wallonia’s commitment to targeted, performance-based environmental support
